For most homes, a cooker hood is more than just a stylish addition to a modern kitchen, it actually has a practical purpose too. Whether it’s providing a bit more light to help you make all those wonderful dishes, or getting rid of some of the heat, steam and cooking odors, it’s important to make sure your cooker hood is installed correctly.

The first thing you will need to do is to get the wall and the cooker hood ready. Most hoods either vent out of the top or the back of the hood, or through ducting that leads outside. Whichever option you’ve gone for, make the necessary preparations to the hood and the wall before you do anything else.

If your cooker hood is quite large or heavy, it will probably be a good idea to have another person help you with the next bit. You need to position the cooker hood where you want it on the wall, and then mark each of the fixing holes you will need to drill using a pen or a pencil. Make sure the holes are the right diameter and depth for the fixing screws you’ll be using.

Depending on the type of cooker hood you’ve bought, you might need to connect the electrics and fix it to the wall all in one go, which means you’re going to need more than one pair of hands. Switch the mains power off before you get started wiring up your hood. Then, if you can get someone else to hold the hood against the wall again, it will make it a lot easier for you to wire it into the mains supply. If the hood can be fitted to the wall before being connected up, this makes things a little easier for you.

Hiring a qualified electrician to wire up your cooker hood is worth considering if you don’t have much experience with electrics. Even if you have done a bit of DIY, it might be the sensible option if the wiring in your kitchen is old or the layout is complicated.

Re-attach parts like the fan and the filters, which you might have taken off to make the hood easier to fit, and then your new cooker hood should be ready to go. As well as helping your kitchen to look great, cooking will be a much more pleasant experience with more light and less greasy odors, all thanks to your new cooker hood.
